Minion Backup 1.3 to 1.4 upgrade?

Ken Schwartz Sep 12, 2017 09:34AM CDT

Hi,

I see that there is a new version of Minion Backup available. We are in the process of rolling out MB to our production servers, but we did all our setup/testing/configuration/etc in version 1.3.

Two questions:
1. The main page (http://minionware.net/products/backup/) has a "what's new in 1.3" section...but...what is new in 1.4?
2. Is there any documentation on how to upgrade from 1.3 to 1.4? Does running the install ps script(s) over-write configuration data? And what about any customizations that we have needed to add (e.g., we required a second step to the sql agent job to run kick off another process)

thanks!

Ken Schwartz

Hey Ken, while we released 1.4, we’re still working on documenting all the avenues like getting the page updated with new features. Though this release just has bug fixes so nothing new.
Running the installer will either install or upgrade, whichever it decides you need. We never touch config data that’s already there, and we never touch jobs after initial install. And of course, the reason is because you could customize both data and jobs so we don’t want to mess you up.

Thanks! Just to be certain, this includes DBMaintInlineTokens, right? IE, all custom tokens that I create (with isCustom = 1) will remain after an upgrade?

Exactly. I never touch data once I do an initial install. I’m fully aware that you could have the data customized and I’m very sensitive to messing up someone’s shop. You could be counting on that data to be there and you could miss important maint. But, just to give you some comfort, here’s the logic that the installer uses to populate that table:
DECLARE @DBMaintInlineTokensCT INT;
SET @DBMaintInlineTokensCT = (SELECT COUNT FROM Minion.DBMaintInlineTokens)
IF @DBMaintInlineTokensCT = 0
BEGIN

INSERT INTO [Minion].[DBMaintInlineTokens]

So you can see that it only inserts if the table is empty. Everything else is up for grabs.
